Developing innovative business ideas was the task of business students at St. Patrick’s College, Thurles. 10 teams followed the path of successful entrepreneurs and presented their new businesses to the public at the ‘Entrepreneurship Exhibition 2010’; the theme of this year’s event was the ‘Green Environment’. The business ideas were many and varied, including Easy-Lift a reusable leg lift for rugby line-outs, which would replace the single-use plastic tape and sponge currently used. Social enterprise was also on the agenda, as one team researched a community based walking school bus initiative for the Thurles area. Shop-Nav’s focus was to make supermarket shopping a more convenient experience through the development of a solar powered navigation system attachment for shopping trolleys. The children’s environmentally friendly crafts market was catered for by URECO jewellery kits and Krafty Kids Kreations, while, the teenage market was the focus of Green Teen Magazine. On Your Bike Ltd. aimed to transform the eco-tourism market in Ireland, while, E-couture designed high fashion, quality eco-handbags. The overall winners, SILECO, produced a reusable silage pit covering, from recycled tyres. SILECO’s core product not only eliminated the annual plastic removal charges faced by farmers, but also reduced the amount of wasted silage compared to traditional covering systems. Congratulations to the SILECO team Laura Watchorn, Mary Byrne, Claire Dunlop, Lisa Kavanagh and Allan Henry.
